Bog-shoe Hiking Tour at Aizkraukle mire

Aizkraukle Mire lies about an hour’s drive from Riga, accessible via the Tīnūži–Koknese highway (P80, E22). It is one of Latvia’s oldest and most diverse bog landscapes, shaped over approximately 8,000–9,000 years. The peat layer reaches up to 7.9 meters in depth, preserving a long natural history beneath the surface.

Historical records of the bog date back to the 17th century, appearing in Swedish-era maps. At the beginning of the 20th century, the mire was significantly larger and more open than today. Several mineral “islands” within the bog have carried traditional names for centuries – Lime Island, Cowberry Island, Ox Island, and Long Island – each with its own distinct vegetation and character.

During the hike, you move through a rich mosaic of habitats: soft moss carpets, scattered dwarf pines, deep pools, small dark lakes, and elevated mineral islands covered with ancient broad-leaved forest. The air often carries the scent of wild rosemary. With a bit of luck, cranes can be heard calling in the distance, and careful observers may spot the carnivorous sundew plant.

The trail is not marked in nature and must not be explored without a certified bog-shoeing guide.
